Disaster Survivors Face Asbestos Exposure Risks

Hundreds of survivors and first responders from a deadly fire at Grenfell Tower in London could be at risk of asbestos poisoning and will need to be monitored, a health services official warned.

Built in 1974, the tower’s ceilings and airing cupboards were built with asbestos materials before the deadly material was banned in England. Seventy-two people died because of the fire on June 14, 2017, and most of them are believed to have died from inhaling poisonous smoke.
