Asbestos Lawsuit Threatened at Old Aurora Hospital Facility

Asbestos warning sign, danger asbestos

City officials in Aurora say asbestos in buildings at the old Copley Hospital pose risks to emergency personnel and community at large. As a result, the city has issued a notice of intent to sue the current owners to have asbestos in the old buildings on South Lincoln Avenue removed or mitigated, the Aurora Beacon-News reported.

Raghuveer P. Nayak and Anita R. Nayak assumed ownership of the facility for $1.2 million in 2007 and the city’s notice claims the buildings on the site have deteriorated significantly since.

"The community has waited for substantial action to be taken by the owners to no avail,” said 4th Ward Alderman Bill Donnell. "The city's issuance of a notice to sue expresses the critical urgency to address the problem for the safety and health of the community."

A 2015 case was filed against the Nayaks by the city in the 16th Circuit Court, seeking to have the old building torn down.
